[DeTomaso] Temp Guage dead

I just took delivery of a 72L with less than 50 miles driven in the last 10 years and 27,500 total miles. I was sitting in the driveway listening to the engine idle for a few minutes and watched the temp gauge approach 180 to 190 degrees and just as I was reaching to turn the motor off, the gauge went to zero/dead, did not do anything else.  Is there anything specific to the Pantera electrical other than making sure the wire to the sending unit is hooked up. I not good with electrical and figure someone may have a few good guesses on where to start. I have run the engine a few times since just to see if it was a poor connection and there is no movement in the gauge.
