>>>He is extremely friendly and willing to learn, but knows NOTHING at all
about mechanical things. He did tackle the R&R of his radiator and fans a few
months back, but had help wiring the fans up. And his help didn't do him any
favors, because they decided it was smart to power both fans off of one relay,
which ultimately resulted in blown fuses when they would kick on at the same
time.
He needs help with very basic things, i.e. bleeding the brakes and clutch,
that sort of thing.
>Mike Drew will probably post the tech session at Markus' home that went on
this weekend (twice ?)
>>>On Thursday I did a steering rack rebuild for him, while a Shelby club
buddy of mine who lives down there took care of a disasterous carburetor vacuum
leak by taking it to a friend in town who owns a speed/machine shop; the guy
kindly overhauled the whole carburetor for free and handed it back to him!
Last night we installed a Rick Moseley relay kit, and it was by far the most
difficult one I've ever encountered. The car, which is a beautiful and very
original car with no rust or other issues, chose to fight back hard. I told
him it was about a 45-minute job (that's about how long it took for Curt Hall
and I to install one on his '74), but failed to recognize that the Pre-L dash
prevents you from easily removing the fusebox without first removing the
glovebox. His glovebox bolts were totally frozen and had to be cut off with a
hacksaw blade wrapped in a rag, and so on and so forth.
About two hours after we started, while we were both upside down and
desperately trying to get the ammeter wires connected, I looked over and quietly said,
"I think we're about 25 minutes into thiat about 2:00 a.m., setting a new
Monterey-to-Vacaville land speed record in the process. :>)
>His car was close to making it to the events itself. So Kudus (sp ) to
Markus for the sacrifice! >>
>>>He reported that his headlights had started going down and out on their
own prior to installing the relay kit, and I told him that without question his
headlight switch had fried. After installing the kit, we tried to ops-test
it, and the switch had no function at all--no 'click' between one position and
the next even; the switch face just floats in there. So a new switch is in his
short-term future now too....
