A few years back, I bought a set of Hall replacement springs for my stock
shocks. They were the ones that are "50% stiffer than stock." I have
always liked them, but wondered what the rates really are. Its time for new
shocks, so I decided to measure the spring rates on the Instron machine at
work so I can get something close on my replacement adjustable shocks. I
was surprised at the numbers:
Rear = 750lb/in.
Front = 400 lb/in.
Just to back up what Tony said, my ~'01 vintage Hall shocks (Aluminum bodied
Aldan shocks) came with springs that checked out at 400/750 Lbs., when I had
them checked at Aldan's shop. My earlier Hall shocks (~'91 vintage, steel
bodied Aldans) checked out at 350/ 720 Lbs. I always felt that that the
springs were too firm in the front, but Robert at Aldan persuaded me to try his
350 pound springs in the front and we compromised at 600 for the rear, with the
caveat that if I wasn't happy I could bring the springs back and swap them
for free.....hard deal to squawk!
As always, your mileage may vary!
Bob
