I wouldn't say they crap out a lot. I think MDS ignitions are extremely
reliable and rarely fail. And even if the box did go south, they are sold
in virtually every O'Reillys I've ever been in so it shouldn't be a problem
to find another.
I've been running a MSD 6-AL plus a MSD distributor for the last 6 years.
No problems at all, though the first one I had got fried from welding on the
car with it installed (don't do that!). I don't carry a spare and don't
think I need one. I much prefer the MSDs C-D spark as it will fire even a
completely oil soaked spark plug.

It seem like everyone wants to run the great MSD! It also seems that the
great MSD seems to CRAP OUT a lot! Isn't there another System that works as
well, without CRAPPING OUT? Does MSD tell you when you buy it that you
should have a back up? It just seems this is common with MSD. Just curious.
Good Luck with your fix.

If you've got a replacement MSD box, then an emergency swap should just
require a pocket knife (though a leatherman is excellent for this kind
of
stuff) and some duct tape - or if there's a Walmart handy, buy some
cheapo
tools (maybe even wire crimper pliers and connectors). Cut the wires on
the
mounted MSD in half at a convenient spot with the pocket knife, strip
them
back and then twist them to the new MSD. Wrap the connections with tape
to
insulate them. The MSD wires should all be the same color so it aught to
be
fairly painless. Duct tape the new MSD to something solid to hold it in
place temporarily if necessary.
You should be able to drive a fair distance that way, or until you can
get
somewhere to make for-real repairs.

I love vacations. Except when things go wrong. 2 miles from Indiana the
Pantera lost power and I am at the start of a 3000 mile tour. It is a
holiday weekend, I have no tools, what appears to be a bad MSD box, a
replacement box, and no one to put it in for me. Happy holiday weekend.
If
I'm not in Chicago tonight, I loose $700.00 in hotel charges.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
