I might have written that based on stripping a pair of Campys some decades
ago. Once the paint was gone, the color was 'chromate-green' underneath and it
took sand-blasting to remove the color for rewelding. The military also used
green zinc chromate on their magnesium wheels for fighter planes back when I was
flying. MIL-SPEC M-3171-C covers the use of zinc chromate on magnesium (seven
different methods of application, according to my 'Metal Finishing
Handbook"). Zinc chromate is well known as a self-healing coating that fills in small
scratches in itself without re-coating- valuable for small rock nicks etc. There
are (or used to be outside CA anyway) a couple of 'cold-galvanize' spray-can
treatments available at refrigeration shops. But zinc is on the way to being a
no-no metal in some areas. Good luck- J DeRyke
