[DeTomaso] The Old & the New Dawg Engine - 351-C NASCAR BLOCK

MD,

Back in 1990 I used a M-6010-B351 351 SVO block which is no longer sold
by SVO/FRPP. I had to sleeve the lifter bores to use 5.0L stock type
hydraulic roller lifters but a newer and better block, the M-9010-V351, is
$1895 from FRPP and it accepts stock type hydraulic roller lifters. Here
are the V351's specs:

Main bearing Size = 351C / 2.749" (so you can reuse any of your stock or
stroker 351C cranks)
Siamese bores (for block strength and overbore capability)
Overbore capability = 0.125" (yields 427 cu-in" with 4.00" max recommended
stroke)
4 Bolt Caps on main journals 2,3,4,5.
9.2" Deck Height (W351 is 9.5" deck version at same price)
Accepts stock type hydraulic roller lifters (reduced base circle cam or
lifter sleeves are not required)
Weight = 190 lbs

In addition to the modifications I mentioned below, you'd also need a
new 351W type oil pan which is readily available.

You might also try to locate a NOS M-6010-E351 block but SVO stopped
selling them around 1994. It's a predecessor of the V351 and has all the
same specs except 4-bolt main on journals 2,3,4 and it won't accept stock
type hydraulic roller lifters.

Thanks Doug....how much do the blocks cost?
Wot build did you go with?

  MD,

If your 351C NASCAR block deal falls though like mine did, you could
always
use a 351-SVO NASCAR block instead which is a 351W/351C hybrid. They use
the 351C style crank but have the superior 351W oiling system and they can
be bored/stroked to 440 Cu-in! The only problems they create are:

  1) You'd have to use a different accessory bracket (available from the
Pantera vendors) for the alternator/AC compressor mounting due to the
  block's 351W style front cover.

  2) You'd need to modify your 351C style intake to match the 351W style
front
  rear valley rails.

  3) You'd need a remote thermostat (I had mine custom fabricated but I hear
that off the shelf ones are available now).

Here's a pic of how close they can look to a stock 351C but keen observers
will notice the lack of an oil pressure sender at the rear of the block.

Got a chance to inspect the damage to the disassembled engine.
Interestingly
enough with the exception of the worn rings 1 3 cyl's with one cyl that
has
a ridge pretty much everything else looked good and rebuildable. Block
will
need a sleeve but bearings looked excellent and the 302B heads,
distributor,
roller cam etc all looked good.

Russ Fulps will again get all my engine work and most of my money ;-]
because I believe in him and his work. Here's some breaking news on the
NEW
  motor....

I thought for about a week what to do on the new motor and after
contemplating buying another standard 351-C block or a 9.5 deck height
Windsor or a Cammer, or a Dart, etc I decided being an old school guy I
had
to have an original 351-C NASCAR block. I tried buying one of these back
in
'99 and dicked around buying it and it was sold.

The good news is I just negotiated a verbal deal on an "original" Ford XH
351-C NASCAR short block...should be signing the deal on Monday.....so
I'll
wait to confirm this deal next week....but it looks excellent. This very
rare race short block was recently rebuilt 355ci, was lined bored (is 30
over) and was set up for race.

The short block has ALL new Weisco piston forgings, 6" Carillo rods,
forged crank by Sonny Bryant....and will use my 302B heads and Rosch
intake
on the new motor and plan to use another NEW Comp Cams Hyd. Roller.

I don't know all the advantages to the NASCAR block but I'm sure Dr. Jones
or others can share with us its advantages....

If I am lucky I'll be good to go and back on the road by July but
definately ready for the Nebraska Sand Hills open road race ORR in August
and a scheduled return to Silver State in Sept.
