Check the timing.
Do a compression check. That'll tell you if you have your valves
adjusted right.

Subject: [DeTomaso] engine backfire
Hi all,
I thought I'd better consult the experts out there.
I just fired up my 351C in my Pantera for the first time since a major
rebuild. I have about 3 mins. on it and it has started backfiring from
the no. 2 cylinder. (it lifts the stack and air filter off the Weber
carb). I put in Crane roller rockers. Could the problem be a rocker
not adjusted right? I have not let it go below 2000RPM for cam
break-in. The oil pressure is good. The PJ gear drive seems to be
making a rattling sound apart from the normal "whine". Maybe I'm
mistaked on this and it's the No2 cylinder making the noise. It's hard
to tell! All the engine wants to do is backfire at any RPM and shut
down..........
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Steve

(PS; also looking for a few parts for my second Pantera. I bought it
in pieces and am missing one rear deck hinge, two front sway bar
brackets and rubbers, one support bracket for the rear lower suspension
arm that goes through the frame, and the black trim that goes around the
rear deck "window").
Maybe someone has these lying around the garage somewhere? Just let me
know the cost etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
