I just felt I had to comment here;
America is a nation of immigrants, it just depends how far back you want to
go. Having said that I do think the immigration policies of this government
are totally screwed (amongst other things, but we won't go there!).
I'm living and working in the US as a 'legal alien' (I believe that's the
right 'welcoming' term your government uses for me). This is my second stint
at doing so, the first was '97 to 2000. I'm here on the basis that there is
no American available to do my job; I get a good salary and pay my taxes and
all my money stays in the Country. However, despite all that at the end of
my 3 year visa I have 10 days to leave the Country (I may if I'm lucky be
able to fight and get a 3 year extension).
Previously I went down to the SS/NIS office and was the only white Caucasian
in the place (and that's both in front of and behind the counter!). I was
told I cannot apply for a green card off my own back and that my best option
would be to go off and get my wife (or someone) pregnant and have a child
born in the USA! Even being fluent in Spanish after spending a number of
years in S. America won't get me in. (By the way don't taint S. Americans
with the same brush as Mexicans; there is a World of difference).
I have to say in my situation I get frustrated watching illegals pour in by
the bus load, most of them even welcomed, especially knowing the majority of
them are uneducated and will not contribute to the sustained wealth of this
Great Country.
But it is your hands, you the voting American public have to correct the
situation with your vote and before it gets to the point you don't have the
majority vote anymore, because as numbers swell the influence will be
greater. It's already happening, I see a huge change in my 5 years away
(maybe you don't see it as it subtly changes day by day). Even here in Reno
it is commonplace to find people that cannot communicate in English.
P.S. As an Englishman I'm not sure you "took" America , we kinda handed it
to you by giving you independence ;<)
