Jim,
If you haven't bought the aluminum yet, you can go much thinner to do what
you need. I used a 40 thousands material as motor mount heat shields from
the headers and light up cats on the AmeriSport GT5-S cars. The radiant heat
was fairly intense and there have been no failures for 20 years. For the
best result, you may want to use 2 thin layers with a heat blanket
in-between. You can get a tremendous heat blanket which is used to shield
flammable materials from copper pipe soldering from your local plumb shop.
Should be lighter and far more than you'll ever need but would be the max
paint protection. Good luck.
