[DeTomaso] Torque Wrench

What I did, and it is very inexpensive, is to make an extension. You get
a nice heavy (thick) wall pipe from Lowe's, etc. Pick your length, I
made mine about 3 1/2 feet long. You drill a hole completely through the
pipe in each end, insert a short ratchet extension in each hole and weld
them in place. I used 1/2 inch extensions which were about 4 to 5 inches
long. Standard chrome plated extensions are fine. Just remove the chrome
prior to welding. I placed the holes exactly 3 feet apart and then I
simply calculate the torque needed based upon the extension length of
3'. Longer is better since it will reduce the force you have to exert to
achieve the 350 ft-lbs. I think I had to put around 450# on a Dana
racing rear end once and it made it very easy. It is no different than
calculating the required torque when using a crow's foot on a torque
wrench. Also, by making an extension, it doesn't add another torque
wrench I have to keep in calibration each year. Parts should only be
around $10 to $20. I would not think a shop would charge you more than
$35 to drill 2 holes and weld the extensions in place. I did mine
myself. I'm sure some Pantera guys in your neck of the woods could drill
and weld them for free (or for a least a six pack). I made mine around
25 years ago and have used it many times over the years.
