A similar thing happened to Jack and I many years ago, altho this was in 
Orchard Supply (another hardware).

We were at the checkout and the clerk might have been all of 18.   He kept 
eyeing Jack's shirt which as usual was one of his many Pantera shirts and then 
looking at this middle-aged guy.

Finally, he looked at Jack and asked, 'Do you really like Pantera?"

Not even thinking 'band' I immediately said 'of course, we've had out car for 
however many years it was then and a few other enthusiastic comments.'

He then replied that he meant the band, so like you we had to explain about 
the car!
