[DeTomaso] BILLET ROLLER CAM & Comp CamsCarbon-Poly-CompositeReplacement Gear

MD,

this sounds like a question for Dan, but you should use the gear
recommended by Comp Cams! I thought they had a steel gear for their
steel cams??? I have the three different part numbers around here
somewhere. If its cut correctly, a would think a steel gear would be a
good choice.

I have a steel, solid-roller cam and use the bronze gear. I would like
to use the steel gear, but I could never get the cam core info from
Hall, so I don't know who made the cam or what the material is! I'm
stuck with bronze for now........

Unfortunately, changing a gear in a Cleveland isn't much fun. You have
to make a measurement from the mounting flange down a particular
distance to the face of the gear and drill the gear and shaft where you
want it located. That makes changing the gear later a pain unless you
have several gears done at once. Maybe someone has a better system????
Let me know......

JB

Was reading the first line in the second paragraph, and just figured
you needed a hard time.

Um, I hate to ask, but what is a "bronze MSD billet steel distributor
gear"?
Is it bronze or steel?
Enquiring minds want to know . . .

RUSS, DR DAN, MIKET, D*CK,

One of the drawbacks to a steel billet hyd roller cam and/or a HV oil
pump
is the need to regularly check and if necessary replace the bronze gear
if
you are racing....good news is they are cheap.

The bronze MSD billet steel distributor gear on my engine (shows slight
wear) so its a good time to replace the gear while we have the car apart
this winter waiting for the Mike Trusty EFI. Is anyone on the List using
a
carbon-poly composite replacement distributor gear on their billet Comp
Roller Cam???

I didn't see a reference for the 351-C in the Comp Cams catalog online
but
doesn't mean one doesn't exist..... I tried using the replacement steel
gear
a local dyno shop recommended a couple years ago and that only proceeded
in
chewing up the billet cam....dumb ass mistake #479 as billet roller cams
ain't cheap to replace.
