I cut this from the Crane web site:
These drive gears are made from high silicon copper alloy ("aluminum-bronze") and precision machined. They are required when using an 8620 steel billet cam. Certain special Crane roller camshafts are manufactured using an "Iron Gear" pressed onto the steel billet cam. These special cams DO NOT REQUIRE an aluminum bronze distributor drive gear. Refer to the specific camshaft application section of catalog. (Iron Gear cams' part numbers have an "IG" suffix at the end of their part numbers) Note: The "Shaft Diameter" dimension referred to is the portion of the distributor shaft that the gear registers on. It may be necessary to remove the original gear to measure the shaft diameter correctly.
I'm not sure exactly what materials are typically used for cams and dist gears, cast iron? It looks like if you have a Crane cam with an "IG" suffix, it can use a standard gear. I guess someone knowledgeable in metalugy could help here.
I had assumed that Crane (and others) don't sell a lot of roller cams, so they use a different material which is easier to machine, but that's just a guess. I think I'm missing something and maybe someone can describe the difference between materials and manufacturing a standard versus a roller cam?

I'm using a Crane hydraulic roller cam, with Cranes recommended steel
gear. I haven't looked at it since I started the engine up this spring,
but it has been to France and back this summer, which is around 2300 km
one way.
