[DeTomaso] ignition question

Cliff,

For your type of driving, the MSD 8350 (fits Ford 351C & 460) would be your
best bet http://www.msdignition.com/dist_15.htm. It'll give you the very
reliable variable reluctor type pickup, MSD's great and highly adjustable
mechanical advance system as well as a vacuum advance for better fuel
economy. Sorry to sound like an MSD salesman but I do like their products.
You don't necessarily need to buy an MSD-6AL box since this distributor has
it's own coil switching electronics inside but if you later want to upgrade
to the MSD-6AL, you can. The only disadvantage with the 8350 is it's a
little taller than the non vacuum advance version that requires an MSD-6AL
box to work. If you go without the MSD-6AL, you also won't need a tach
adapter since the electronics inside the 8350 acts just like a set of
points.

Before you yank the old distributor, turn the engine over with a wrench
until you're at top dead center on the compression stroke. You can tell
it's the compression stroke because the rotor will be pointing at the #1
plug wire terminal. Make a note (or mark with a piece of tape) where the
rotor is pointing to on the engine so you can line up the 8350's rotor with
the tape mark when you install it. Then install the 8350 so the rotor
points to the tape mark and the #1 terminal on the 8350's cap lines up with
the rotor. The rotor turns about an eighth of a turn when you drop the
distributor in and meshing with the hex of the oil pump shaft at the same
time takes some patience. Just keep lifting and dropping the distributor
while slightly turning the rotor till it meshes. Sometimes pushing down
firmly on the distributor as the hex oil pump shaft is contacted also works.

Good luck.

Subject: [DeTomaso] ignition question

Guys,
Hope all finds you well. Its that time in NY to start thinking of a winter
project. I am considering upgrading my stock ignition system with whatever
the "forum" recommends.
I know a lot of you have gone with the MSD Billet distributor (dont know
which one) and 6AL box with Blaster 2 coil.

Any other recommendations?
I am a Sunday driver that puts about 200 miles a year on the car.

Any hints on installation? I am moderately capable.
Thanks
Cliff NY
