The long pump driveshaft tends to lean one way or the other in its recess.
Then what happens is, the top or the oil pump drive catches on the edge of the
hole in the dizzy shaft. Sometimes, just bumping the starter a tiny bit will
allow the shafts to mate. At the point you are at now, the gear teeth are in
mesh. I'd recommend pulling the coil wire before bumping the engine, and hold the
dizzy down firmly when it gets bumped, or it will pop up and you get to start
over.
In other cases, lifting the dizzy up 1/8", then slamming it down, or grinding
a bigger chamfer on the dizzy-shaft hole to provide more lead-in angle, works
