Dennis,

Be sure to us a high quality Fel-Pro gasket when you replace the carburetor!  I don't
know what intake manifold you have on that engine, but many of the factory intakes
had a vacuum channel in the top surface of the manifold on the carburetor mount.
It's not uncommon for lesser gaskets (like what came with your carb) to fail to seal
that vacuum channel properly, resulting in a vacuum leak and similar symptoms to
what you described.
