into it to accept the thermostat flange.  It is a piece that commonly rusts to 
shreds, so don't be surprised if when you pull the hoses off of it, there's not 
much left underneath.

Several people have remanufactured this part, sometimes in stainless steel, 
with provisions for thermostats.  I tend to favor 180 degree units, just 
because.  Note that the thermostat won't dictate the MAX temperature the motor will 
run, but rather the min temperature.  If you have a super-effective cooling 
system and run a 160 degree unit, the motor will run at about 160, and 
similarly, with the same cooling system and a 200-degree thermostat, it SHOULD run 
around 200.

(My Cobra is proving to be an exception to this rule, as with a 180 degree 
thermostat, which has been operationally tested and opens at exactly 180, the 
car runs at a constant 145 (too low) for reasons unknown...)
