Well, it was a very good day for me and #4268. The Russ Fulp engine finally came alive! We discovered a weak cylinder after doing a leak down test. We decided to pull the heads and find out what was wrong. Bad valve guides were to blame. I bought these heads from a friend, and (Ken), you know who you are :-). In an effort to save me some bucks, (which I do appreciate), Russ did not replace what looked to be new valve guides in the heads. By the time I got the car to the dyno, after 5500 miles, it only made 326 HP to the rear wheels. I was hoping for more. Within the last couple of weeks, Russ did a valve job and replaced the guides. Today, on a different dyno, we saw 385 HP and 402 lbs of torque! Yahoo! The HP and Torque still dropped like a stone at 5650 rpm. The dyno operator hooked up a vacuum gauge for another pull, and as he suspected, the needle of the gauge started fluttering at 5650 rpm. He said this indicated valve float and recommended changing the springs. Russ
is coming to my house this Saturday to change the springs. Love that service! The dyno guy said we might see 400 HP at the wheels with new springs! I highly recommend Powertrain Dynamics in Huntington Beach, California. This guy is great. His name is Steve and the phone number is 714-373-0068. His web site is Powertraindynamics.com.
