Are we doing Apples and Oranges again?  Sorry, I'm not playing that one.

In an equivalently performing Diesel Miata, you could expect to get 34 mpg
in mixed driving and 40 on the highway.

In which case:

75 miles/26 MPG 75 miles/34 MPG 
But let's not use small numbers:  Over a full tank of fuel, say 300 miles,
it would look like:

300/26*4.40 300/34*5.05 
That's apples to apples.  That's Diesel vs gasoline in today's market.  Were
Diesel prices to go down to a more reasonable level, it would skew the data
even more in favor of Diesel.

If you want to compare a Diesel pickup truck to a Miata, then no, of course
the Miata will win, but you could perform the same comparison with a
gasoline pickup truck with the same results. For an equivalent vehicle, the
Diesel will ALWAYS be more efficient.
