It's not unusual for a misfire to occur without the ECM logging a code.
There really isn't a fool-proof way to tell if a combustion event took place
in each cylinder without a lot of expensive technology. I'd love to be more
helpful, but I can only add that it sounds like an electrical issue to me
too, and you will want to get it resolved before the misfire melts your cat.
